Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located at the both sides of your spine, in normal condition, they can help filter waste products and toxins from the blood. In addition, they can function in the following aspects: regulating blood pressure, maintain the balance of water and electrolyte, promote the production of red blood cell.

Definition

Renal Failure refers to a medical condition, in which kidneys lose their functions partially of completely. In this case, toxins begin to build up in the body and a series of symptoms will occur.

Symptoms

In the initial stage of kidney failure, there can be no obvious symptoms. As the illness condition progresses, some symptoms will occur. Such as, swelling, high blood pressure, poor appetite, fatigue, shortness of breath , high creatinine level, proteinuria and so on.

Classifications

Acute Renal Failure This illness condition refers to a sudden loss of kidney function, and it can occur in several hours or days. In some cases, the damage to kidneys can be reversible.

Chronic Renal Failure This disorder usually take months or years. In some cases, the damage to kidneys can be irreversible.

Diagnosis

In most cases, the diagnosis of renal failure can be confirmed by blood test and urine test.

Blood test: It can be used to measure the building up of waste products in the blood. BUN, creatinine level and GFR are common routine blood tests.

Urine test: This test can be used to measure the amount of protein or the concentration of electrolytes and so on.
